SWORD OF THE PROPHET

Janneken inherited only one thing from her mother—a fancy carved chest containing a letter she couldn’t read.

When her mother dies, Janneken is alone in the world, left with a mysterious letter that may or may not tell her something about her mother’s past. Does she even want to know, since her mother adamantly refused to talk about it? What had happened to her mother and where was her father? She wants answers, but before she can get them, she must learn to speak up and ask the questions, which is a difficult thing to do for a shy maid like Janneken.

Accompanied by her neighbor’s son, Hans, and his friend Cornelius, who distribute forbidden Anabaptist writings, she embarks on her first ever journey out of Amsterdam. Hans is a friendly young man, whom Janneken soon trusts. Cornelius is aloof and not too enthralled with Janneken’s presence on their trip, even though she is determined not to be any trouble.

Wherever Janneken goes, an unwelcome shadow turns up. Pieter is a shady government spy who is nearly impossible to shake off. What does he want and why?

When Janneken arrives in Telgte, she is in for the biggest shock yet. Can she find the courage to take her destiny in her own hands and fight for the life SHE wants?
